The sculpture represents a thundercloud, rain, and the river basin of the Big Blue and Little Blue Rivers, which converge nearby. Trail users will follow the trail through the “rains” of the sculpture. Helbing knows this landscape well; although he now resides and makes a living as a sculptor in Chicago, he spent his childhood in Shelbyville. The completed sculpture will be created from stainless steel and be approximately forty feet in height. Mary Elizabeth Stout sculpted the statue of Balser Brent, a fictional character in Charles Major’s book, The Bears of the Blue River. The city of Shelbyville was willed $2,000 from Alice Major, Charles’ wife, for the completion of the project. While Stout was sculpting the statue, she lived in Paris, where she had a young boy serving as a model while she sculpted. The statue was located at the Charles Major School until 1980 when it was then moved to the Public Square, where it can be seen today. The restoration of the historic Balser Statue was completed in early 2017 and was funded by Shelby County and BRCF. About the Artist: Mary Stout (Bell) was born in 1851 in Hardin County, Ohio. She was one of eight children, and at the age of 22, she was married to Joseph W. Stout. The pair then had seven children during their marriage. The Shelbyville Parks and Recreation Department was awarded $655 through BRCF for the completion of this project. Mike Helbing was the artist chosen to complete these sculptures along the trail. This bicycle sculpture is displayed for the enjoyment of those using the Blue River Trail System. Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities created the artwork in collaboration with Shelbyville High School art students. The drawings were then sent to a metal fabricating company, Bo-Mar Industries, to bring the works to life. The project was funded through a grant awarded by BRCF. Southwestern’s project was slightly different than the other local schools that partnered with the same program. The result of Southwestern’s partnership with Arts for Learning was an outdoor sculpture and sculpture flower garden rather than an indoor mural. The sculpture garden includes clay flowers that each of the students, enrolled at that time, were able to make and design. The sculpture flower garden runs along the front of the building, and the sculpture is to the right of the front entrance. About the Artist: Quincy Owens grew up in Indiana and was a talented athlete. He had several scholarships offers to play at a collegiate level but went through a life-threatening injury. At this point, he recognized that his passion for art would be what he pursued. The bike rack, which spells “Shelby” in American Sign Language, was partially supported by the Quality Places and Spaces for Shelby County Fund held at BRCF. Broadway St. in Shelbyville. This tribute piece aligns with the 50th anniversary of Garrett’s passing and stands to honor his legacy of achievements. Pamela Bliss, a professional artist from Indianapolis, is the creator of the piece. This mural is part of BRCF’s “Pride in Place” program. The initiative seeks to foster community pride, enhance the quality of life for residents, and create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and potential new residents. Through our past placemaking efforts such as the traffic cabinet art boxes, the sundial at Blue River Trailhead, and the Alley activation on E. DePrez was born in 1855 in Cincinnati but came to Shelbyville at a very young age. He was just one of ten children born to John and Mary DePrez. He started working for his brother’s bakery at the age of fourteen and was always hardworking. He first got into the hardware business as a part-owner in 1880. Many other spaces in the building were occupied at this time. Later on, the J.G. DePrez company bought the other occupied spaces and eventually owned the entire building. He owned a lot of land in the county and was a very trustworthy businessman, one the county knew well and trusted. Not only did he own and operate the hardware store, but he also was one of the directors for the First National Bank. This helped build trust with the community that he was so involved in. After graduating from Shelbyville High School, she spent a year at Franklin College and then transferred to a small school in Lexington, Kentucky, for dramatic expression. After her three years of study, Tomlinson graduated and took a job as a dramatics instructor in Paris, Kentucky. After this, she spent some time studying the dramatic arts in Chicago and New York, and it was around this time when she chose her stage name, Marjorie Main. She appeared in 85 plays, films, and musicals during her acting career years. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Ma Kettle, which was the role she was very well known for. She actually modeled her character, Ma Kettle, off of a local Shelby County neighbor of hers at the time. Hewas a novelist and lawyer, but he decided to close his law practice after his first novel. His pen name was Edwin Caskoden, and he wrote “The Bears of Blue River,” among many other books. He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in 1945 and was part of the world championship team in 1947. After his five seasons of playing professionally, he moved to Shelbyville, where he taught high school health and P.E. and coached the high school football and track teams. She grew up in Shelbyville and attended Shelbyville High School. After traveling and making various public appearances for being the world’s tallest woman, Allen returned to Indiana, where she was the secretary for the Indianapolis Mayor, William Hudnut. His first win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) was in 1937. Two years later, he won for the second time in 1939 and a third in 1940. His wins in 1939 and 1940 made him the first person to win the race two years in a row. With WWII, the racetrack was closed, leaving it to be neglected and run-down. While others advocated for residential space to replace IMS, Wilber Shaw advocated for the racetrack to live on. He then met with Terre Haute businessman and racing fan Tony Hulman to gauge his interest in purchasing IMS. In 1945, Tony Hulman bought IMS for $750,000 and named Wilber Shaw president of the speedway. Garrett helped lead Shelbyville to its first state championship in 1947 and was named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball the same year. He won another state championship as a coach in 1959 and was the first Indiana Mr. Basketball to win a title as a player and as a coach. Garrett was only the third African American drafted into the NBA. He would have played for the Boston Celtics at the National level; however, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. Upon his return, he coached the 1959 state champions, Crispus Attucks. Later, he served as assistant dean for student services at IUPUI. We are excited to see this project located behind the Porter Center along the Big Blue River come to fruition. The book on display will be “Shelby County A-Z”. The park, Shelby Mills, features a storybook trail for children, a river deck to view the Big Blue River, and lots of historical information of the area that was once home to Shelby Mills and the location where the interurban railroad crossed the Big Blue River. The area also houses native trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as benches made from limestone that came from a St. Paul stone quarry. The Foundation worked with an amazing group of partners and funders to help us make this improvement possible. This new equipment replaced the small, outdated equipment the school previously had. The new equipment is more significant to accommodate more students and is visually enticing so that students will be drawn to it. The Park features soccer and flag football fields, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and more. The BRCF worked with the Shelbyville Parks Department to make this playground a reality. The playground was designed so that kids of all ages and abilities would be able to play side by side. The Kellogg Foundation awarded $160,000 towards the project and asked that BRCF raised another $125,000. The grant was awarded in 2013, with the first significant part of the trailhead completed in 2017. Since the trailhead was completed, the trail has continued to expand. In 2019 BRCF committed to a partnership with Major Health Partners, the City of Shelbyville, and Shelby County to install a warm water pool at the YMCA. The woods are a legacy of the Meltzer family and have been bought and protected by the Nature Preserves Act of Indiana. The trail is situated in a 1.2-mile loop through the woods. The Foundation granted $30,000 to the Central Indiana Land Trust in 2013 and an additional $5,000 in 2016. The new plaza area can host up to 100 people, features a water fountain that lights up in the evenings, and has a stage available for storytimes, concerts, or private events. There are many different things to check out as you walk along the trail. Some of these things include the Blue River Memorial Park splash pad, playground, soccer and softball fields, Kennedy Park, Sunset Park, and several art pieces. The BRCF has helped fund some of the sculptures and art pieces along the trail to incorporate more art into our community. Washington St. A portion of this funding was from the BRCF Endowment Fund, and the other part was from the Joseph and Laura Plymate Fund for beautification. The Garden features a path with several plants, trees, and stones. Each element in the Japanese Garden has a historical or religious significance. The Strand hosts several concerts, plays, productions, and other events every year. The Foundation has helped support some of The Strand’s operations for several years, and they were a recipient of the COVID Rapid Response Grant, given through BRCF.
